This semester I’ll be spending my independent study working on the final projection mapping exhibition. I plan to use each project as a major checkpoint. During the first project I will build the actual set up I will be projecting onto. Along with this I’m also composing the main illustrations for the animations used. For the second project I’ll animate each illustration, and during the final project I will be executing the final vision while making any tweaks not apparent during the first two projects.

Over the summer I brainstormed ideas for my projection mapping exhibition, but didn’t really find anything I loved. During July, Big Brother 28 started premiering and I found myself enamored by the live feeds on the days when episodes didn’t air. That’s when I found my project idea. I wanted to play on ideas of mundane surveillance, specifically the idea of being unknowingly watched. As a woman I often feel like I have to look over my shoulder out of fear for my safety. This idea is the central focus of my project; The uncertainty of being watched, even in a supposed safe space.

For the construction of the TVs that will be projected onto I’m making them out of cardboard and then painting over it. I started by making a paper mockup that’s 3.5”x3in”. Then from that I made the screen cut out that was 2.5”x2”. With this mockup, I can scale it up when I make it with the cardboard to get the right dimensions I want. Also, for the very top TV I want to make antennas sticking out of it. For the interactivity part of this project I want each video to be able to be changed, almost like the viewer is snooping into the lives of others.
