Net.Art itself is a term that refers to any digital media. This ranges from emails, graphics, texts, images, advertisements, and more; Simply anything that can be consumed on a screen. The nature of net art is to exist on a screen. It isn’t meant to be printed out and displayed in the way paintings are displayed in a gallery. They exist in a seemingly gray space of art; it’s not quite tangible but still produces important meaning and opens the horizon for new art to be created. To me, it’s interesting how the author of this article compares net art to caged animals in a zoo. It’s something alien to our traditional way of thinking, but something we still want to observe. The net art movement reminds me of the Dada art movement. These two movements initially received backlash that it isn’t true art, but this very discussion of whether it is art or not makes the content have great artistic value. When net art was first introduced there were no limits since the internet itself was so new. No one really knew how to handle the influx of content entering the internet, letting anyone upload anything. Over time this has changed as censorship has become more apparent. Website builders like SquareSpace, for example, are notorious for taking down sights that include content that doesn’t align with their views. This wouldn’t have happened when net art was first introduced, as the internet at this time acted as a wild west.
