I’ve been a little lost on what I want to do for projection mapping, but I think after playing around in class with it I have an idea. My freshman year in Arts 1010 I created a linocut print of a bass with collages of various bassists in the back. When I was looking for something to projection map onto for practice I came across my bass, which then reminded me of this piece. I want to take the static mixed media aspect of that print and convert it into a moving image. My plan is to map the bass out by the different parts. I want the yellow to have moving images of various bass players that loop or rotate, the white to be psychedelic patterns inspired by the rainbow in the background, and each string to have the sound map generator from MadMapper. I want this to act as a more realized version of my final project from Arts 1010, as I feel like I didn’t truly know my voice in my work.
Before, the piece was mainly focused on male bass players. I’d like to change this by focusing on female bass players, as female bass players are often overlooked. Even then, I don’t know a lot about female bass players that have paved the way, so I’d like to learn more about the women who helped forge the road for female bass players. This gives me ideas of overlaying not only clips of these women playing bass but also interviews to create a more personal connection with the audience. I hope my project serves as a way to break the masculine associations with bass, as it’s mainly male bass players who are in the spotlight.
