As a graphic designer, my biggest passion is branding. With branding comes the importance of logos to communicate what a company is trying to portray. This article talks about the importance of a proper logo in regards to a brand's success.
When Adobe talks about what makes a good logo they list the following: It’s unique, memorable, versatile, reflects the brand's identity, and is timeless. Coca-Cola is a perfect example of this. Since opening in 1892, the logo has always and featured white script over a red background. Edits have been made to the logo, but very minimal ones that aren’t noticeable to the consumers eye. This shows how it embodies the characteristics of a good logo, which helps the success of the brand.
Furthermore, they talk about what can make a bad logo, such as by asking questions like: “Is it legible? Is it trendy? Is it simple?”. One of the most infamous failed logos is the 2012 London Olympics logo. This logo still featured the rings of the Olympic logo, but everything else was redesigned to in very angular shapes. Instead of looking like a logo, it looked like a graphic for a flier. The drastic change that did not align with the Olympic’s pre-established brand identity left audiences feeling confused. The shapes were meant to represent an abstract form of the numbers 2012, but it’s so abstract that it did not make sense in the design. There was also the addition of pink, a color never used in the Olympic logo before. The 2012 Olympic logo followed trends, wasn’t legible, and was not simple, causing it to fail.
